Qualities That Make A Good Franchisee

A good franchisee is essential for a franchisor in order to fulfill his dream of owning a successful franchise chain. Hence, you must be very critical in the selection of the candidates who wish to buy a franchise from you. To help you in your selection procedure, here are some tips on recognizing a good franchisee:

• Avid learner: A franchisee will be able to duplicate your business model only if he learns it well. And to learn it well, a franchisee must be receptive to the trainings and knowledge, which you will impart. Even if he has sufficient experience and information about the field of work, when he is a franchisee, he must consider himself as novice.
• Effective Communicator: No matter what kind of franchise operation you run, people who buy a franchise from you will need to talk to different individuals in their course of work. They will have to talk to the clients, to their employees (if any) and of course, to you and your representatives. Hence, take people with good communication skills who can convey their thoughts and ideas very easily.
• Ample experience: The franchisees you choose must have some sort of general business skills. General business skills mean marketing, sales or administrative expertise. There is also some franchise opportunities where having practical knowledge of the field is very much necessary.
• Financially Capable: Even if your chosen franchisee has all the previous qualities, nothing will become fruitful, if he doesn’t have enough financial strength. It’s better to choose someone with lower experience but with good investment capability over someone who is just the opposite! Moreover, having the required money to buy a franchise is not enough. He must also have a proper financial planning to run the business till it breaks even.
• Aware of the brand: Check out what kind of questions the prospective franchisee is asking to determine how much knowledge he has about your brand. If you see that he has ample knowledge of your product and its demand in the market, then you can be assured that he has done his research well. This also ensures that he is dead serious about starting a franchise with you.
• Open to new ideas: The franchisee you choose should have a positive outlook. He must be open to trying new ideas. That will make it easy for you to introduce changes in the system that can be beneficial for both of you. But avoid people who are too ready to take a risk; they can sometimes spoil the brand image in their quest for success.
• Ready to follow: A franchisee is supposed to be a good follower. He must be ready to follow the given set of rules and regulations that will be there in the franchise agreement. He should always consult with you, if he faces any problem. A person who is too much of an individual may not be an ideal candidate to become your franchisee.
• Original thinkers: Though it’s necessary that you take people who can follow your orders, but also make sure that they can think for themselves. An innovative franchisee is much desirable than a blind follower of rules and guidelines. But always ensure that he knows that you are to be consulted at every stage of introducing a new change in the system.
